چکیده

Severe valvular aortic stenosis (AS) is one of the congenital heart diseases that may require intervention during infancy(l). Surgical valvotomy (performed under cardiopulmonary bypass) has, until recently, been the only method by which the aortic valve gradients could be reduced. Balloon aortic valvotomy (BAV) has now emerged as an attractive alternative(2,3). Despite the availability of the balloon valvotomy technology in our country, experience with balloon aortic valvotomy has been limited to older children with valvular AS(4). We report the successful application of BAV in an infant (age 4 months) with severe valvular AS.

Background: Balloon valvuloplasty is a relatively new technique for relief of obstruction of aortic valve. The primary results of this procedure are similar to surgical valvotomy with fewer complications and mortality. Materials and methods: One hundred fifty-five patients with congenital aortic stenosis were enrolled in this study over a period of 6 years (1991-1997). Participants were all un...

Aortic valvotomy for critical aortic stenosis in neonates and infants aged less than one year.

Between April 1974 and December 1987, 20 infants (six under one month of age) (mean weight 4.9 kg) underwent surgical valvotomy for critical aortic stenosis. Three of the four patients treated before 1976 died. Since 1979, 16 infants (four neonates) have undergone valvotomy with no deaths. Mortality for the whole group was 15%; in the neonates it was 33%. There were no late deaths. The survivor...

Objective: Valvotomy and the autograft procedure are the most common surgical treatment options for children with valvular aortic stenosis. We evaluated the results of these surgical procedures in our institution. Methods: Retrospective analysis was done of all patients presenting with aortic stenosis and operated upon before the age of 18. In 11 patients a valvotomy was performed and in 36 an ...

Balloon aortic valvotomy in pregnancy.

Severe aortic stenosis in pregnancy has been known to have a high maternal and perinatal mortality, documented at 17 and 32%, respectively, in 1978. More recent reviews still indicate significant maternal morbidity and unfavourable fetal outcomes. Severe aortic stenosis with or without symptoms leads the table of ‘high maternal and fetal risk’ in valvular heart disease in pregnancy. We report t...

Predictors of survival in neonates with critical aortic stenosis.

BACKGROUND Failure of infants with critical aortic stenosis to survive after adequate valvotomy despite a left ventricular size that appears to be adequate indicates that additional preoperative anatomic features may contribute to mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS Discriminant analysis was used to determine which of several echocardiographically measured left heart structures were independent pr...
